Often considered to be Eliot's last great work, the Four Quartets are the philosophical poet's interlinked meditations on humanity's relationship with time, the universe, and the divine.
All four poems follow a musical structure that was characteristic of many of Eliot's poems. Burnt Norton focuses on our relationship with the present. East Coker focuses on life, death and continuity. The Dry Salvages focuses on the connections between humanity, while Little Gidding focuses on the choice between evil and God.
Written during the first years of World War II, Eliot's poems were favoured for giving people hope in a turbulent time. While Eliot's overt religious writing divided critics like Orwell, Eliot believed the poems to be his best.
