Herbert Swire's first hand account of the Challenger expedition, on which he was Navigating Sub-Lieutenant. In this work, extracted from his journals, Swire presents a person narrative of the Challenger's circumnavigation of the globe in 1872 to 1876, a monumental voyage that made many discoveries that lay the foundation of oceanography.
Each volume is illustrated with a colour frontispiece, in addition to three colour plates to Volume I, four colour plates to Volume II, and monochrome in-text illustrations throughout. Collated, complete.
With a foreword by Major Roger Swire, and an introduction by G. Herbert Fowler.
The illustrations are by the author.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original cloth slipcase. Externally, smart. Spines are a little age-toned. A few light marks to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with scattered spots, mostly to the first and last few pages. Slipcase is a little rubbed and worn with a few light marks, in a very good condition.
