First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

The first edition, first impression of Vita Sackville-West's biography of her grandmother, Pepita de Oliva, and her mother, Lady Sackville.

In the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrapper.

Loosely inserted is a double sided leaf implying an association with Knole House - the ancestral home of the Sackvilles - and the letter writer.

The note reads 'Cabinet between door & fireplace in the King’s Bedroom (Silver Room) Knole. - In “ Avenue with pillars in centre pull out centre (2nd) drawer on right – feel between & find another drawer – in it a piece of paper, on which is written ‘father, Mummy & Vita looked into this drawer April 29 1898’ signed Vita’. The slip is concluded with the names Mrs McClean and Mrs Greaves.

Pepita was a Romani Spanish dancer, who popularised Spanish flamenco dancing whilst performing across Europe. Despite an official marriage, Pepita had a long partnership with Lionel Sackville-West, with whom she had five children.

Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece and fifteen plates. Collated, complete.

Perhaps the best known work from Bloomsbury Group figure, garden designer and writer Vita Sackville-West, well known today for her relationship with Virginia Woolf, and for providing the inspiration for Woolf's beloved novel 'Orlando'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, fine. Spotting to fore edge of text block. Offsetting to endpapers. Dust wrapper exceptionally bright, with a miniscule closed tear to the head of the back strip, and minor light spotting to fore edge of rear wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to title page, with instances of foxing to perimeters of leaves facing plates. Pages bright.
