Much of the material was initially recorded in articles which first appeared in the 'Locomotive' magazine.

With discussion of combustion, fuel, maintenance, repairs, enginemen, valves, cylinders, and superheating.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Boards bright. Significant rubbing to back strip heads and tails and joints. Head of rear joint of volume II starting, with board tenderly held. Remaining hinges strained, with boards slightly tender. Rear free endpaper of volume I tenderly held. Internally, firmly bound. One diagram has been hand coloured by a prior owner. Pages bright and generally clean, with instances of light spotting.
