Written by Dame Freya Madeline Stark, a British-Italian explorer and travel writer who wrote more than two dozen books on her travels in the Middle East and Afghanistan, as well as several autobiographical works and essays. She was one of the first non-Arabs known to travel through the southern Arabian Desert in modern times. This set contains: Baghdad Sketches, 1937. Illustrated with a frontispiece, fifty-six plates, ten drawings, and one double page map. Collated complete. A detailed account of the author's experiences travelling across Baghdad, with chapters on the desert routes, the making of a nationalist, concerning smells, manners, Syriac Christmastime, education, Ramadhan, and more. Rome on the Euphrates, 1966. Illustrated with forty-eight plates, a double page map, and a folding map to the rear. Collated complete. A history of the Roman Empire and its movement along the Euphrates, the longest and one of the most historically important rivers of West Asia, being one of the two defining rivers of Mesopotamia.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and board edges of Rome on the Euphrates, with the odd small mark to the cloth of Baghdad Sketches. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot.
