The first edition of this very scarce cookery book.
In the original cloth binding.
Beginning with an overview of the religious significance of cakes in England, followed by a series of recipes including, but limited to, madeira cake, orange cake, potato cakes, scones, Fat Rascals (Yorkshire), doughnuts, Eccles cakes, and a "Small and Economical Christmas Cake".
Hilda Leyel, who wrote under the name Mrs. C. F. Leyel, was an expert herbalist and founder of the Society of Herbalists (later the Herb Society). She wrote a book on the topic titled 'Elixirs of Life' as well as the classic cookbook 'The Gentle Art of Cookery'.
Condition
In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with yellowing to the spine and minor shelf wear. Internally, with cracking to the gutter between pages 20-21, however remaining firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with occasional light spots, heaviest to the first and last few leaves.
