This series, written during the 1830s-1840s, The Comédies et Proverbes trace Musset’s evolution from early Romantic exuberance (La Nuit vénitienne) to the mature psychological drama of Lorenzaccio, forming the cornerstone of 19th-century French verse drama.
The full cycle of Musset’s fifteen romantic “comedies-with-a-moral,” including La Nuit vénitienne, André del Sarto, Les Caprices de Marianne, Fantasio, Lorenzaccio, On ne badine pas avec l’amour, Le Chandelier, Il ne faut jurer de rien, Il faut qu’une porte soit ouverte ou fermée, Louison, Un Caprice, Bettine, Carmosine, Barberine and On ne saurait penser à tout.
Alfred de Musset (1810–1857) was was a French dramatist, poet, and novelist; a key figure of French Romanticism, celebrated for his poetry, prose, and especially his plays.

Bound in quarter morocco with marbled paper boards. Externally, very smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Previous seller's small label to front paste down. Endpapers age toned. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, if slightly age toned to perimeters with one or two spots.
