What Our Customers Say...
Description
Colour Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper
Originally published as 'The Escaped Cock' in 1929, and first published under this title in 1931, this is an excellent edition of D. H Lawrence's short novel about the resurrection of Christ, inspired by a visit to the Etruscan tombs undertaken by the author in the 1920s.
In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.
With ten wood-engravings, in red and black ink, from John Farleigh. Collated, complete.
Christ survives his crucifixion, and celebrated his body and the sensuality of the world. Lawrence explained 'he begins to find what an astonishing place the phenomenal world is, far more marvellous than any salvation or heaven — and thanks his stars he needn't have a 'mission' any more'.
Bookplate of Barbara P Carter to front pastedown.
