The first edition of The London Spectacle, illustrated by Polish expressionist and draughtsman Feliks Topolski, with marginal notes and an introduction by British journalist D.B. Wyndham Lewis. Published by John Lane The Bodley Head in 1935.
In the publisher's original paper boards, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Contains numerous charming in-text and full page illustrations throughout, including a double page spread of Ebury Street. Collated complete.
As an expressionist, Topolski emphasises the emotions of those that he illustrates and you cannot smile at this showcase of his work on London and the English. Coupled with the notes of Lewis, known for his humorous newspaper articles, the keen wit and observation of Topolski makes this a very entertaining read.
Condition
In the publisher's original paper boards, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart, with fading to the extremities and spine, heavier to the top edge. The faint odd spot to boards. Dust wrapper is generally bright and clean, with fading to the extremities, heavier to the spine. Signs of shelf wear, with a chip to the top left corner of front wrapper. End papers are generally bright and clean, with very faint offsetting and the small odd spot. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the rare faint spot to title leaves.
