First edition. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and twelve black-and-white plates. Collated complete. A detailed account made by Huxley as Assistant Surgeon during his time on the H.M.S. Rattlesnake, on a voyage of discovery and surveying to New Guinea and Australia. The value of Huxley's work was recognised and, on returning to England in 1850, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Written by Thomas Henry Huxley, an English biologist and anthropologist known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
