Two beautifully illustrated first edition works from Japan's mid 20th century 'Tourist Library' series, a publication aiming to introduce Western readers to a variety of aspects of Japanese culture, in a period during which tensions between Japan and the West were rising.
Present here are two of the forty volumes published in the series:
No. 9: Castles in Japan, the 1935 first edition by N. Orui and M. Toba. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and numerous full page and vignette photographic images throughout.
No. 39: Hand-Made Paper of Japan, the 1942 first edition by Bunsyo Zyugaka. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and with twelve washi paper samples tipped in. Collated, lacking three tipped in paper samples.
With the bookplate of collector Cliff Parfit to the front pastedowns.
Condition
In the publisher's original paper wraps. Back strips age toned, with light edgewear to wrap perimeters. Castles wraps bright, with handling marks to Paper, and small loss to tail of fore edge of Paper. Rear hinge of Castles strained and a touch tender. Bookplate to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Lacking three paper samples.
