Edited by John Alexander Hammerton, who is described by the Dictionary of National Biography as "the most successful creator of large-scale works of reference that Britain has known". Among his contributions include the first edition of Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopaedia and his periodical (jointly edited with Herbert Wrigley Wilson) The Great War: The Standard History of the All-Europe Conflict.
Copiously illustrated throughout with in-text figures.
Condition
In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart. With fading to the spine and mild bumping to the extremities. A few damp stains to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot. Ownership bookplate tipped-in to the front free endpaper.
