This work was published in Vilnius, a major centre of Jewish cultural life, at a time when Jewish communities in Eastern Europe faced increasing economic hardship, political repression, and rising antisemitism.

Bastomski died in Vilnius in March 1941, while the city was under Soviet control, shortly before Nazi German occupation.
