First published in 1759, Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire's novella enjoyed both success and scandal upon publication, widely banned from public consumption due to religious blasphemy. As philosophers of Voltaire's day contended with the problem of evil, so does Candide in this theological work, albeit more directly and humorously. Voltaire ridicules religion, theologians, governments, armies, philosophies, and philosophers.
