First edition. Illustrated with sixty-four plates and four folding maps. Collated complete. A detailed commentary, being the official account of the British Arctic Air Route Expedition (BAARE), a privately funded expedition to the east coast and interior of the island of Greenland from 1930 to 1931. Led by Gino Watkins, it aimed to improve maps and charts of poorly surveyed sections of Greenland's coastline, and to gather climate data from the coast and interior during the north polar winter. With chapters on finding a base, establishing the ice cap station, autumn at the base, a winter journey, and the assault on Mount Forel, amongst other aspects of the trip. Written by Frederick Spencer Chapman, a British Army officer and Second World War veteran who was attached as "ski expert and naturalist" to this expedition. With a foreword from Admiral Sir William Edmund Goodenough, a senior Royal Navy officer of the First World War. Introduction by Henry George "Gino" Watkins, a British Arctic explorer and the leader of this expedition. Additional chapters from James Maurice Scott, a British explorer and writer; P. M. H. Lemon; and Augustine Courtauld, a British yachtsman and Arctic explorer best known for serving as the solo meteorologist for this expedition.

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the endpapers. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown.
