The uncommon first edition of this work, complete in two volumes.
With the handwritten bookplate of Chris Viveash to the front pastedowns. Viveash was a lifelong member of the Jane Austen Society, wrote numerous articles on Austen, and was the partner of David Gilson, who wrote the definitive bibliography of Austen.
Edited by R. W. Chapman, volume I features Austen's letters from 1796-1809, and volume II from 1811-1817.
With a folding map to the rear of volume one, alongside seventeen plates and a frontispiece, and with two folding maps, a folding frontispiece and eleven plates to volume two. Collated, complete.
With the inscription of G. G. Harold, July 1934, to the front free endpapers.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth backed, marbled paper covered boards. Back strip lightly age toned, with shelf wear to back strip tail, and rubbing to back strip head. Spine labels lightly age toned. Hinges strained, with front board a touch tender, and rear board firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns, and inscriptions to front free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
