First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding
The first edition, first impression of Waugh's third novel, chronicling the efforts of the British educated 'Emperor Seth', assisted by a fellow Oxford graduate, Basil Seal, to modernize his Empire, the fictional African island of Azania, located off the eastern coast of Africa.
Illustrated with a map frontispiece.
Evidence of bookplate removal to the front free endpaper, but with the bookplate of journalist and author Bruce Arnold to the front pastedown. In 1983 it emerged that his telephone had been bugged by Charles Haughey in the Irish phone tapping scandal.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally excellent. Bookplate to front pastedown, with bookplate removal to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, with only the odd spot.
