First Edition, Limited Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

The first edition thus. This work had previously been published as a limited edition in 1929 under the title 'The Escaped Cock'. Publisher Martin Secker retitled the work prior to the publication of this edition, which was released the year following Lawrence's death.

In the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.

Limited to 2,000 unnumbered copies.

In a letter to a friend, Lawrence explained the work with: 'I wrote a story of the Resurrection, where Jesus gets up and feels very sick about everything, and can't stand the old crowd any more — so cuts out — and as he heals up, he begins to find what an astonishing place the phenomenal world is'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. A touch of fading to back strip, otherwise externally fine. Light edgewear to dust wrapper back strip head, with closed tear to back strip tail, and two small closed tears to back strip head. Minor marks to rear wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
