A new edition. In the publisher's full cloth binding with gilt detail. Inscribed by the illustrator to the half title page, reading, 'To Pauline and Paul, with best wishes, Willy Pogany, Christmas 1945'. With a frontispiece, and twelve full-page plates by Willy Pogany. Pogany was a renowned Hungarian illustrator, best known for his artwork of myths and fables, and for his distinct Art Nouveau style. A pseudo-translated poem by Richard Francis Burton, under the pseudonym of Haji Abdu El-Yezdi. 'The Kasidah' is a long poem, exploring Sufi philosophy, a branch of mystic thought found in Islam. Richard Francis Burton was a British explorer, writer and orientalist scholar. He is best known for his documented journey to Mecca, disguised as a Muslim during a time when non-Muslims were strictly forbidden. With an introduction by Dhan Gopal Mukerji, the first successful Indian man of letters.

Condition

In the publisher's full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the edges. Some fading to the spine and front board. Light discoloration marks to the boards. The odd spot to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age-toned but otherwise very bright and clean. Illustrator's ink inscription to the half title page.
