Hotson posits that Shakespeare could have used Justice Shallow's character, and potentially others from the Shallow family, as inspiration for the characters in his plays.

In the publisher's original navy cloth binding. Externally, smart. Slight spotting and fading to perimeters of boards. Spine slightly faded. One small chip to cloth at spine. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Offsetting and the odd slight spot to endpapers. Previous seller's small label to front paste down. Dust wrapper, generally smart. Slight soiling to wraps with the odd spot, damp stain and handling mark. Rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in the odd closed tear and chip. Loss to head of spine and upper perimeters of wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean if slightly age toned with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few leaves and rough cut fore edge.
