First edition, second impression. Published the same month and year as the first impression. Illustrated throughout with linocuts. A fictionalized account of the ordinary soldier's First World War experience based on real events. This work represents a widely relatable experience with 'John Bullock' reflecting the 'John Bull' of English culture, the quintessential Englishman, and the title echoing Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan (1684). Written by Henry William Williamson, an English writer known for his novels concerned with wildlife, English social history, ruralism and the First World War. Illustrated by William A. Kermode, an Australian artist.
Condition
In the original red cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor wear and light fading to the spine. Original unclipped dust wrapper is smart with light wear and minor chipping to the extremities. Minor loss to the head and tail of the spine with small closed tears to the extremities. Sunning to the spine and panel edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot to the endpapers.
