Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding, With Slipcase

Complete in two volumes. Volume one contains a colour frontispiece. Volume two contains over three hundred leaves of plates, being a facsimile of the manuscript held at the Wurttemberg State Library. Collated complete. A detailed and comprehensive study of the Stuttgart Psalter, a richly illuminated nineth-century psalter, considered one of the most significant of the Carolingian period. Written in Carolingian minuscule, it contains three hundred and sixteen images illustrating the Book of Psalms according to the Gallican Rite. With commentary on the structure of the manuscript, descriptions of the miniatures, and two detailed appendices. Written by Ernest T. De Wald, an American museum director and eminent scholar of medieval and Renaissance art, specialising in medieval manuscript illumination. Bound by Eric Sweet, a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art, before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies, later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking, reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style.
