First published in the U.S. under the title 'Cradle of the Deep', this work from silent film actress Joan Lowell was a sensational best selling autobiography until it was exposed for its fictionalised narrative.
In it, she claims that she lived on her father's ship, the Minnie A. Caine, from three months old until she turned seventeen when the boat burned and sank off Australia. In reality however, Lowell had been on the ship, which remained safely in California, for only 15 months. Simon & Schuster had to reclassify her book as fiction and offer a refund for returns, after which the book continued to sell relatively well.
