Hardy identified as a Victorian realist, similar to the likes of George Eliot. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain such as those from his native South West England.
This set contains the following works:
'A Pair of Blue Eyes' - One of Hardy's romances, centring around the love triangle of a young woman and her two suitors from very different backgrounds.
'Under the Greenwood Tree' - Hardy's second novel, originally published anonymously in 1872, and following the activities of a group of west gallery musicians.
'The Woodlanders' - Concerns the efforts of an honest woodsman, Giles Winterborne, to marry his childhood sweetheart, Grace Melbury.
'Tess of the D'urbervilles' - Initially appearing as a censored and serialised version by The Graphic, this major novel received mixed reviews upon its publication, largely due to the challenges to sexual morals of late Victorian England.
Condition
Uniformly bound in full decorated calf. Externally, very smart, with slight rubbing to the extremities, most notable to 'Blue Eyes'. With a few small marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. With scattered spots to the front endpapers of 'Blue Eyes'.
