Twenty-four fables of Aesop and others collected into one volume, the first trade edition. Illustrated throughout. Including classic tales of 'A Fox and a Raven', 'The Hares and the Frogs,' 'A Fox and Grapes,' and 'A Man and a Satyr' among many others. Rendered into English by Sir Roger L'Estrange, an English pamphleteer, author, courtier and press censor best known for his polemical pamphlet 'An Account of the Growth of Knavery'. Illustrated after the designs of Marcus Gheeraerts, a Flemish artist working at the Tudor court, described as "the most important artist of quality to work in England in large-scale between Eworth and van Dyck".

Condition

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light wear to the extremities and minor fading to the spine and board edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers.
