The first edition of this very scarce work.
A comprehensive guide to Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh in North India.
The author, Edward Henry Hilton, was a native of the city, and was involved in the siege of Lucknow and the defence of the Residency during the 1857 Indian Mutiny. Thus this is a vivid guide to the city, exploring the history and features in great detail; Hilton was so gifted as a guide that he served as the guide to the city when it was visited by Royalty and other dignitaries.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, two folding maps, one map, and seven plates. Collated, complete.

Rebound in a cloth binding, with renewed endpapers. Externally, smart. Text to the spine has rubbed. Original front wrap pasted to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the first page of adverts. Tape repair to the gutter between pages 106 and 107.
