The work was written by Finnish Philosopher Gunna Landtman. Landtman was also a sociology and philosophy professor and is considered to be the first modern sociological anthropologist. Landtman lived with the Kiwai Papuans for two years, where he gathered research for this work. This work looks at the life's of the Kiwai Papuans through the eyes of Rousseau's theory of the ideal community. This theory states that the most ideal society is based of men being true to their human nature, which he explains means freedom of will.

In the publisher's original cloth. Externally in very good condition with slight fading to the spine, bumping to the spine resulting in rubbing and minor rubbing and marking to the boards. Offsetting and the odd spot to the end papers. Internally generally firmly bound with the chords showing to the frontispiece but firm. Bright pages. Pages generally clean with the odd spot, heavier to the title page and light offsetting to the half title and the publisher's advertisements. Light spotting to the fore edge and age toning to the top edge.
