John Macdonald was a Scottish Highlander who recorded his memoirs. First published during the French Revolution, the memoirs of his days in service provide a rich panorama of life in the company of blind fiddlers, maid-servants, the Scottish aristocracy, soldiers, historians, Oriental Princes, servants of the East India Company and men of great wealth, including James Coutts the banker.

In publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Fading to spine with bumping to the head and tail. Odd mark to boards with fading to edges. Contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper. Previous owner's sticker to rear paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean and bright with light spotting to the front and rear of the work.
