This science fiction novel details a war between two fictional republics of England. The anti-military sentiment of the work shows the author's pacifism.
Charles Edward Montague (1867-1928) wrote novels, essays and articles with a particular emphasis on his opposition to war. In the belief that he would be aiding a swift resolution to the First World War, Montague fought despite being too old to enlist, and later became an armed escort for important people visiting the battlefield, amongst them H. G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw.
