First edition. Illustrated with three colour plates, eighteen half-tone plates, and many in-text images. Collated complete. A comprehensive study on the Melanesian people of the South-East Solomon Islands, with specific reference to social organisation including birth, marriage, chieftains, feasts, sacrifices, ceremonies, and burials. As well as commentary on spirits, tabu and curses, black magic, incantations, and folklore. Written by Walter George Ivens, a New Zealand linguist and anthropologist who specialised in the Melanesian Mission.

Condition

In the original blue cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear and minor rubbing to the extremities. Light fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting, predominantly to the first and last few pages. Previous owner's ink stamp to the front endpaper.
