This edition is an observational social critique of the conditions facing England’s agricultural workers in the early 20th century, the work calls for reform and a reflection on the social and economic forces eroding traditional rural life and the people who survive there.

John William Robertson Scott (1866–1962) was a journalist, editor, and rural commentator well-known for his writings on the British countryside. He was editor of The Countryman magazine and became a leading advocate for the improvement of rural living conditions, exposing the flaws in the romanticization of the countryside, typical of the period.
