Published the year after his death, H. Rider Haggard's autobiography covers the first fifty-six years of his life, commencing with his earliest recollections and exploring his life and prolific career. With anecdotes of his friendship with Andrew Lang, travels, marriage, writing, politics and his reassimilation into rural England life.
Haggard was best known for his adventure romance novels set in exotic locations and as a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. His stories, including the eighteen Allan Quatermain stories beginning with King Solomon's Mines, continue to be popular and influential.
Condition
In the publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spines. With a 1" horizontal closed tear to the head of Vol I. backstrip. With two decorative bookplates to the front pastedowns, one with the initials 'MH' and one belonging to Saint Francis Library. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a rule plate of the Saint Francis Library and reference number to the front free endpaper. Subsequential offsetting to the following blank leaf. Scattered spots throughout, heaviest to the first and last few leaves. Chip to the corner of p. xiii, with tape reinforced.
