Complete in three volumes. Limited to one thousand three hundred and forty copies, of which this is number one thousand two hundred and thirty-eight. The complete works of Thomas Otway, an English dramatist of the Restoration period, best known for Venice Preserv'd, or A Plot Discover'd. Volume one contains: 'Alcibiades', 'Don Carlos', 'Titus and Berenice', 'The Cheats of Scapin'. Volume two contains: 'Friendship in Fashion', 'The History and Fall of Caius Marius', 'The Orphan', 'The Souldiers Fortune'. Volume three contains: 'Venice Preserv'd', 'The Atheist', 'Poems', 'Love-Letters'. This set was compiled and edited with an introduction by Augustus Montague Summers, an English author and clergyman renowned for his scholarly work on seventeenth century English drama. Summers edited numerous 'Complete Works' of many different renowned authors, poets and dramatists; including Thomas Shadwell, Aphra Behn, William Wycherley and in this text, Thomas Otway.
Condition
In the original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Library ink mark to the tail of the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with minor age toning to the endpapers. Library bookplate to the front pastedown with a library ink stamp to the title page and reference sticker to the rear endpaper.
