What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Limited Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

In the publisher's original quarter bound paper Vellum over decorated boards.

These two volumes are a set of limited editions, being number three hundred and eighty nine of fourteen hundred and fifty.

This edition features collotype plate illustrations by William Blake, with 53 leaves of plates: 15 plates in the first volume, and 38 plates in the second volume. Collated, complete.

Arabesque ornaments designed by D. P. Bliss, printed on Van Gelder paper. The whole has been arranged by Francis Meynell, the founder of The Nonesuch Press, and the arranger of these editions, called it his favourite Nonesuch book, noting that "the Blake illustrations . . . surprisingly right," and that "everything about the making of this book went easily from the beginning: a pretty sure sign of its success."

The text of this edition of Milton's English poems has been arranged by delegates of the Oxford University Press, that edited by the late Canon Beeching after the earliest printed copies of the several poems. With notes on the illustrations and their titles given by Geoffrey Keynes.

Condition

Eternally, generally smart. The odd handling mark and spotting to the paper Vellum, as is usual with this binding. Rubbing to boards, with general shelf wear and bumping to extremities. Small rubbing loss to spine of volume two. Offsetting and spotting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with slight spotting, heavier to rough cut fore edge and first and last few leaves. Minor worming to upper-right corner of last leaves and endpapers of volume one, not obscuring the text.
