A study of rural life in the nineteenth century, discussing certain objects used in day to day life within cottages, and the way people lived in rural areas. With chapters on the fireplace, candlelight, the cottage kitchen, home industries, and the hearth, amongst other subjects. Written by Gertrude Jekyll, a British horticulturist, garden designer, craftswoman, photographer, writer and artist who created over four hundred gardens in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. She also wrote over one thousand articles for magazines such as Country Life and William Robinson's The Garden. With publisher's advertisements to the rear.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd mark to the boards. Minor fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper.
