This edition includes 13 illustrated plates, including a frontispiece of Charles XIV, King of Sweden and Norway (Jean Baptiste Bernadotte) By L. David. Collated, complete.

Barton leans heavily on the French–Swedish diplomatic correspondence published in the 1880s, extracts from the Riksdag Protocols, and memoirs by Swedish officers such as Gustaf Löwenhielm, to provide and extensive history of Bernadotte. Exploring his evolution from soldier of fortune to Scandinavian monarch, his history marked by cautious neutrality, infrastructure projects, and the consolidation of a modern constitutional monarchy.

This is third in Barton’s Bernadotte trilogy after The First Phase, 1763-1799 (1914) and Bernadotte and Napoleon, 1763-1810 (1921).

Sir Dunbar Plunket Barton 1st Baronet PC (1853-1937), was an Anglo-Irish judge, MP and popular historian.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Fading to spine, and upper extremities of front board. Slight bumping and rubbing to extremities. The odd slight handling mark to boards and spine. Slight spotting to spine. Previous owner's small inscription to front paste down. The odd spot to endpapers, with very slight offsetting. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. The odd spot, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves.
