Colophon states that this edition is the first thus thin paper edition of The Two Jungle Books. The Jungle Book was first published in 1894, with The Second Jungle Book being published just one year later in 1895.

With a colour plate frontispiece and numerous detailed, monochrome vignette illustrations by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling, and the American artist William Henry Drake. Drake is best known for his contributions to Rudyard Kipling's work. 

This first edition, first impression of the thin paper edition being uncommonly encountered with the gilt elephant design thus.

The Jungle Book is a collection of exciting stories following the adventures of various animals such as Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, and the boy or "man-cub" Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by wolves. The Second Jungle Book includes a further eight stories, including five about Mowgli, and incorporates moral lessons. A number of the tales in The Jungle Book take inspiration from ancient Indian fable texts such as the Panchatantra and the Jataka tales. Written by Joseph Rudyard Kipling, an English novelist, short-story writer, poet, and journalist.

Condition

Bound in the publisher's original cloth with gilt elephant design. Externally, generally smart with fading, heaviest to the top edge and spine, as well as some minor handling marks. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities. Previous owner's neat inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper, dated 1925. Internally, sections of the binding are a touch strained. Pages are a trifle age toned however generally bright and clean, barring a few minor handling marks and a crease running into a marginal closed tear on pp. 323r.
