Signed by the author to the limitation leaf.
Additionally inscribed by the author to the recto of the front endpaper, "Dear Athene and Beau, you don't know how happy your existence has made me during the last year - with love, Hugh Walpole, Christmas 1924".
Athene Seyler was an English actress of both the stage and screen. In 1922 she met and started living with the fellow actor Nicholas "Beau" Hannen, who was married but whose wife refused a divorce. Athene and Beau started living together, and finally married in 1960 after Beau's wife died.
'The Crystal Box' is a short autobiographical work by Hugh Walpole, a prolific author who wrote across genres, and also writing scenarios for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films. This is an open and honest insight into his life.
Condition
In the original publisher's vellum binding. Externally, generally smart. Light discolouration and marks to the boards and spine, as is usual to see with vellum. Mark to the top edge of the front board. Author's inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
