This is a substantial biographical compendium containing notices of 500 notable men and women born, residing, working, or dying in Nottingham or Nottinghamshire who made significant contributions to the region. Entries are arranged alphabetically, and cover clergy, industrialists, civic leaders, artists, scientists, medical figures, and even Robin Hood as a legendary county figure. This copy comes with a separate supplement from 1925, containing notes on an additional 28 further names and errata. Robert Mellors (1835–c.1930) was a local historian, vice-president of the Thoroton Society, alderman on the Nottinghamshire County Council, and author of In and About Nottinghamshire (1908).
