First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-three plates. Collated complete. A detailed account of the rise of lawn tennis from around 1880 to 1920, with chapters on the Renshaws, the Dohertys, advice to young players, grass courts, hard courts, covered courts, and much more. Written by George Whiteside Hillyard, a British Royal Navy Commander and tennis player. Under his supervision as secretary of the All England Club the Wimbledon Championships moved to its current site at Church Road. With a collection of newspaper articles on early lawn tennis.
Condition
In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting predominantly to the first and last few pages. Light age toning to the endpapers.
