In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with pictorial paper covered boards. The annuals contain a wide variety of entertaining short stories and articles, embellished throughout with illustrations. A perfect example of the literary and social tastes of young girls in the 1920s. 'Schoolgirls' Own' was a popular weekly story paper published for girls, running from 1921 to 1936 across 798 issues. The main stories were focuses on Morcove School, a high class boarding school for daughters of the rich and aristocratic. This set contains six volumes of the charming 'Schoolgirls' Own Annual', dating from 1924 and 1929, consisting of: (1924) Illustrated with four colour plates, including a frontispiece. With stories: “No Longer a Madcap,” “Through Perils to Fortune,” and “A Typical Week in Betty’s Life,” and articles: “Little Presents You Can Make Yourself,” “Winter Cycle Hints,” and “How to Make Dolls’ Clothes and Furniture.” (1925) Illustrated with four colour plates, including a frontispiece. With stories: “Morcove’s Great Day,” “Loyalty’s Reward,” and “The Rival Studies,” and articles: “Lawn Tennis,” “Your Own Room,” and “Autograph Albums.” (1926) Lacking the frontispiece but with three other colour plates, all present. With stories: “Out in the Wilds,” “A Girl of England,” and “The Guardian Ghost,” and articles: “The School Rambler Club,” “Novelty Bags,” and “How to Produce a Play.” (1927) Illustrated with four colour plates, including a frontispiece. With stories: “A Queer Quest,” “Such a Scream!” and “Jean of the Circus,” and articles: “Winnie Goes to the Wedding,” “How to Make Silhouettes,” and “The Indoor Girl.” (1928) Illustrated with four colour plates, including a frontispiece. With stories: “Star of the Snows,” “The Silent Guide,” and “Playing Second Fiddle,” and articles: “Your First Camera,” “Helping Mother in the Home,” and “The Schoolgirl Athlete.” (1929) The Schoolgirl’s Own Annual. Illustrated with four colour plates, including a frontispiece. With stories: “Polly’s Little Prank,” “Rip to the Rescue,” and “The Jewel of Asia,” and articles: “Sports Day,” “Holiday Hints,” and “For Your Chum’s Birthday.”
Condition
In the publisher’s original quarter cloth binding with pictorial paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Previous owner’s inscription to front free endpaper of “Annual 1929” and “1928”, “1925”, and “1924.” Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. The odd crease to spine. The odd handling mark to boards and spines. “1926” particularly bumped to tail of spine with closed tear at rear joint, with slight loss to cloth at front joint. Front hinge of “1925” cracked, with binding materials exposed, holding somewhat loosely. Front free endpaper of “1926” and frontispiece removed. Slight offsetting with the odd spot to endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges strained in places, with binding material partially exposed occasionally, but holding. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves, more so to "1925" and "1926".
