Gift leaf from the Dean of Bristol bound in before the front endpaper, with a gift note tipped-in to the front paste down, 'To Robin + Nigel, with affection good wishes for Christmas, from their friend, the Dean, 24.xiii.24'.
At this time Edward Burroughs was the Dean. An English writer and Anglican bishop, Burroughs later became the Bishop of Ripon. He once caused controversy for describing modern universities as "counterfeit presentations", as opposed to Oxford and Cambridge.

Condition
In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, boards are a little rubbed. Small bump and puncture mark to the tail of the front board. Light bumping to the extremities. Minormarks to the boards, a little heavier to the rear board. Letter tipped-in to the front endpaper. Two additional leaves bound before the title page, one being a typed gift leaf, the following having a tipped-in picture of the Bristol Cathedral. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot.
