Limited to one thousand copies of which nine hundred and fifty are for sale. Illustrated with twenty-eight plates in collotype and facsimiles of the original title page, head and tail pieces. Collated complete. A ballad opera in three acts, originally written in 1728 with music arranged by Johann Christoph Pepusch. It is one of the watershed plays in Augustan drama and an example of the once thriving genre of satirical ballad opera. Written by John Gay, an English poet, dramatist, and member of the Scriblerus Club best remembered for this work. With an introduction by Oswald Doughty, a British author and lecturer of English.

Condition

Bound in quarter cloth with grey paper covered boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine and some marking to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot and minor age toning to the endpapers.
