Written in the post–World War I era, the manual reflects the values of thrift, order, and self-sufficiency, essential during this time of economic restraint and instability. It offers over a hundred concise, no-nonsense tips on a wide range of domestic topics such as "Bathroom Hygiene," "Brass Beds," "Flowers in Vases" "Cutlery Hints," "Eggs in Waterglass," "Flies, How to Kill Them," and "Oil Stoves", and menus for seasonal dinners.

Mary Woodman was a British domestic advisor and author, known for her practical household manuals.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Very slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Bookplate from "Martin & Pamela Finch: Exlibris Gastronomique" to front free endpaper. Rear hinge ever so slightly cracked, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Dust wrapper, generally smart. Tape reinforcements to inner extremities. Slight loss to head of spine and upper rear panel. The odd small chip and closed tear to extremities. small ink mark to spine, obscuring one letter. Spine slightly age toned. The odd very slight handling mark to wraps. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves.
