First edition, binding A with middle initial G in author's name on spine and upper cover. A collection of the early plays of Eugene Gladstone O'Neill, an American playwright whose poetically titled plays were among the first to introduce into the U.S. the drama techniques of realism. Containing: The Emperor Jones, a 1920 tragic play that tells the tale of Brutus Jones, a resourceful, self-assured African American and a former Pullman porter, who kills another black man in a dice game. Diff'rent, a 1921 two-act tragedy concerning a woman who rejects her fiancée over a single act of infidelity and later becomes engaged to another man who turns out to have poor character. The Straw, a 1919 three act play following characters Eileen Carmody and Stephen Murray during their time at Hill Farm Sanatorium.
Condition
In the original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with light wear to the extremities and fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with minor age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
