First and only edition. Very scarce work. Illustrated with twenty plates. Collated complete. This work offers a pleasing guide to lettering in the form of a series of plates, each showcasing various examples of popular typefaces. Accompanied by tips and pointers of what to study and focus on when copying the letter designs. Written by Arthur Payne, an English designer and headmaster of Bath School of Art and Design from 1922, the year after this publication was issued. One leaf of advertisements to the rear.
Condition
In the original paper wraps. Externally, sound with light wear and chipping to the extremities. Sunning to the spine and edges with the odd small mark and a contemporary ink inscription to the front panel. The odd small closed tear to the extremities with a 1" closed tear to the front panel. Light loss to the extremities, particularly the rear panel. Rear hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with light age toning to the extremities and the odd small spot. A contemporary ink inscription to the title page. Ink marks to plate xiv, with sympathetic repairs to the last two pages with paper tape.
