The very scarce first edition of this work.

The author journeyed along the upper Yangzte for many years, and was known as the "Grand Old Man of the Upper Yangtze". Samuel Cornell Plant is best known as the first person to command a merchant steamer on the Upper Yangtze River in 1900. 

Plant later collaborated with Chinese merchants and the government to create the Sichuan Steam Navigation Company, serving as Captain of SS Shutung and SS Shuhun, and providing a regular merchant steam service on the Upper Yangtze.

Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and with numerous vignette and full page monochrome illustrations by Ivon A. Donnelly.

With a former owner's inscription, dated 1922, to the front pastedown.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, otherwise excellent. Inscription to front pastedown. Light spotting to fore edge of text block. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with light spotting throughout.
