The third edition of Etchers and Etching by prolific American artist and lithographer Joseph Pennell. Volume II in the Graphic Arts Series, edited by Pennell. Published in 1920 by Fisher Unwin. First published in 1919.
In the publisher's original cloth. Contains all fifty-seven etched illustrations by Pennell. Collated complete.
Lecturing at the National Academy of Design in New York, Pennell intended to teach artists, students and amateurs the art of etching through reproducing classic works from the fifteenth century and onwards. What followed was a beautiful and informative study into the intricate craft.
In this particular third edition preface, Pennell confronts his critics in entertaining fashion.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth. Externally, very smart with minimal marks. Very minor bumping to the head tail of the spine. Offsetting to the end papers and an ink gift inscription to front free end paper. Internally, firmly bound, with very slight sign of wear between leaves pp.170-171, 188-189. A very small closed tear to bottom of leaf p.xxi. Pages are bright and clean, with a mark to bottom of p.171.
