Description

Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

Nine volumes of a twenty-seven volume set. Being volumes one to nine only. Wessex edition, later printing. The Works of Thomas Hardy in Prose and Verse with Prefaces and Notes, being the complete Novels of Character and Environment. With a frontispiece and a map of Wessex to each volume. Hardy's Wessex is a fictional literary landscape located in the south and southwest of England, and the setting for his major novels. Hardy named the area "Wessex" after the medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom that existed in this part of that country prior to the unification of England by Æthelstan. Written by Thomas Hardy, an English novelist and poet, considered a Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot. Influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, he was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain such as those from his native South West England. This set contains: Volume I - Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Volume II - Far From the Madding Crowd. Volume III - Jude the Obscure. Volume IV - The Return of the Native. Volume V - The Mayor of Casterbridge. Volume VI - The Woodlanders. Volume VII - Under the Greenwood Tree. Volume VIII - Life's Little Ironies (a collection of short stories). Volume IX - Wessex Tales (a collection of short stories).
