What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Scarce, Signed, Signed Binding, With Letter
The first edition, extracted from the 'Transactions of the Thoroton Society'.
Bound by G. Mottram.
Letter from the author is tipped-in after the front endpaper, dated 19. Feb. 1921, "My Dear Markham: Many thanks for your letter. I wish that I could come on the 3d of March, but I am lecturing here that evening; and in any case, i is rather difficult for me to get away to a distance earlier in the week than Friday, as I am always at Armstrong College in term-time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. I shall hope, however, to be able to come some other time: if I engaged myself to you now for next year's annual meeting, it would be all right. I am glad you approve of my Lincoln Visitations, in which, to tell the truth, I feel some pride, as I think they are a solid contribution to history. I send you copies of three recent articles, from the Thoroton Socy. Transactions, Yorkshire Genealogical Journal, and Archaeologia Aeliana, which I hope you will accept. Yours very sincerely, A. Hamilton Thompson".
This scarce work offers a concise history of Newstead Abbey, and its establishment as a priory in around 1170. The priory of St. Mary of Newstead is better known after the Dissolution of the Monasteries as being the ancestral home of Lord Byron.
Illustrated with four plates. Collated, complete.
By A. Hamilton Thompson, who was Professor of Medieval History at the University of Leeds.
